SATURDAY, October 31, 2009 will remain forever in the mind of Morpeth Harriers legend Jim Alder, writes George Patterson.
This was the day that the Commonwealth Games Marathon Gold Medallist, and MBE, was finally inducted into the Scottish Athletics Hall of Fame at the Annual Awards Dinner in the Marriott Hotel, Glasgow.
Alder, whose marathon achievement was all of 43 years ago, was also celebrating the 45th anniversary of his 30k track record of two hours, which still stands today.
The Chair of Scottish Athletics, Mark Hollinshead, said: "Forty five years on and Jim Alder's records are still standing the test of time.
"It is indeed an honour to induct him into the Scottish Athletics Hall of Fame."
The 69-year-old, who was born in Glasgow and moved to Morpeth when he was a child, follows six other illustrious athletes in the form of Allan Wells, Eric Liddell, Liz McColgan, Wyndham Halswelle, Yvonne Murray and Tom McKean into the Hall of Fame.
He was very humbled by the honour and said on being inducted that even though he had moved to the North East of England when he was nine, it meant a lot to him to compete for Scotland.
As customary, Alder, pictured receiving the Millennium Trophy from Morpeth Harriers in 2008, was also presented with his Hall of Fame framed photograph.
It was taken by legendary sports photographer Mark Shearman when he competed in the 1966 Polytechnic Marathon.
