WELL it was one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, then go cat go, as Morpeth paid a musical tribute to the King of rock and roll.

Suspicious minds might have thought that inviting people of all ages, shapes and sizes to impersonate Elvis Presley in front of a live band in the town's Market Place would leave the audience crying in the chapel.

But the good luck charmers from Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade had a Bank Holiday Saturday hit on their hands as four jailhouse rockers dusted off their blue suede shoes and took to the stage — two of them in full costume.

Chamber of Trade member and keyboard player with backing band Cadillac '59 Dave Pope said: "We are all great fans of Elvis Presley's music and we thought it would be a fun thing to do."

The best look-alike Elvis was judged to be Trevor Clark, from Ashington; the best dressed Elvis was window cleaner Derek Henry, from Bedlington; the best Elvis voice was judged to be that of Michael Chambers, from Ellington.

All too soon it was time to unplug the microphones, pack up the guitars and hit the road...the Elvises had left the building.
