IT seems to have been a long time coming, but work is finally beginning on the £32m redevelopnment of Morpeth town centre.
A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of the scheme will be held on Thursday, July 24.

Marks & Spencer will take the anchor store at the new-look Sanderson Arcade with a department store replacing its current food outlet in the Market Place.

Other tenants named so far include New Look, Timpson, the Jewellers Guild and HealthiChoice.

One town centre car park, at Lumdsen's Lane, has already closed in advance of work starting, and the Back Riggs South car park behind the bus station shuts on July 21.

A spokesman for developers Dransfield Properties Limited said: "Sanderson Arcade is set to deliver a new commercial heart into this thriving County Town. The scheme will incorporate an Edwardian arcade and stunning retail architecture.

"This has been a long awaited development for the town and we hope people will agree that this level of investment and commitment to Morpeth is something worth celebrating."
