A SYMBOL of Morpeth's market town history will be a centrepiece of the new-look Sanderson Arcade.

An award-winning sculptor has been commissioned to create a work of art for the £32m development.

It will take the form of a life-size black bull and will be situated above the entrance to the arcade.

The work has been undertaken by renowned British sculptor and designer Judy Boyt who has won awards for her images of animals, including the RBS medal for Sculpture which she achieved with her 'Rebellion' piece — a horse twice the normal size — sited in the City of London.

Judy researched the history of Aberdeen Angus bulls from across Scotland and the North of England being sold at Morpeth in bygone days.

She said: "This is a really exciting project and I have done a great deal of research and worked with the local community in Morpeth to really reflect the history of the area.

"I have visited the site several times to see where the sun comes in to ensure the bull is in the best position so everyone can get a good view of it as they come and go in the Arcade."

As the work will be above the Arcade entrance, Judy is working in fibre glass resin to create a bronze effect without the weight.

She has been commissioned by the developers, Morpeth II, a joint venture between Yorkshire-based market town specialists Dransfield Properties and Ethel Austin Properties Ltd.

Dransfield has worked with artists to create high-quality public art for a number of its developments.

Managing Director Mark Dransfield said: "We are delighted to be working with Judy on this project in Morpeth and we can't wait to see the finished sculpture, which will look stunning in the Arcade."
