Saturday was the culmination of several years work by many people under the banner of Emily Inspires! Her Past, Our Present, Your Future. Programme Director Penni Blythe-Jones reflects on the project and the day.

Among those giving an address at St Mary’s Church was Eleanor Mills, Associate Editor of the Sunday Times. Eleanor is known for her writing on women, work and the ongoing gender revolution.

Geoffrey Davison from Sydney, Australia, gave a tribute to Emily on behalf of the family members. Geoffrey, a great, great nephew of Emily, tells how he first heard of his famous relative and thanks the members of the Morpeth community who have done so much to acknowledge Emily’s bravery.

One hundred years ago Emily Davison was at the forefront of the suffrage movement and as can be seen here attitudes by some were very different to those today.

The Bikes and Bonnets cycle ride from Longhorsley to Morpeth was one of the events dedicated to suffragette Emily Davison.Highlighting the importance of the bicycle in the women’s suffrage campaign it also marked 100 years since Emily left her Longhorsley home to begin her journey to the Derby where she received fatal injuries from the King’s Horse.

Northumbria’s first Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird pays tribute to Emily Davison and the service to commemorate and celebrate the internationally famous suffragette. Vera is also a political activist, barrister, author and lecturer who was MP for Redcar for nine years. She is the only honorary woman member of the Durham Miner’s Association.

As part of the tribute to suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, hundreds of people paraded from Morpeth Railway Station to St Mary’s Church, retracing the steps of Emily’s funeral 100 years ago. Led by the band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, groups such as the WI and the campaign for women bishops joined with cyclists and singers as well as individuals wishing to pay their respects.

Hundreds of people attended the centennial memorial service for Emily Wilding Davison at St Mary’s Church in Morpeth. Many tributes were paid to the internationally famous suffragette. Emily Inspires programme Director Penni Blyth-Jones welcomed guests and family members led the laying of floral tributes at the graveside.

Schoolchildren have come up with a design for one of the flower beds in the formal garden at Cragside. Rothbury First School Year 2 pupils were delighted to plant up the bed that will be seen by the thousands of tourists that will visit the National Trust property near Rothbury.

The organisations charged with looking after the Northumberland coast and outdoor activity providers have agreed a code of conduct for coasteering.Some sections of the Northumberland coast provide an ideal place to enjoy coasteering and are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
