THE baking bug was biting at a Morpeth retirement centre as residents celebrated International Older People’s Day.

Staff and residents at Anchor’s St Christopher’s House in Abbey Meadows wanted to demonstrate the contribution that older people have made to the community.

The day began with a coffee morning and cake stall, where produce was made by tenants, their relatives and staff.

There was then a lunch of broth and dumpling with buttered stottie and a cup of tea, followed by a quiz afternoon.

House Manager Eileen Wilson said: “We celebrate Older People’s Day every year. It’s a good chance to have some fun while raising money for charity and our tenants look forward to taking part, baking cakes and scones for the day, as well as enjoying the events themselves.

“Activities are a major part of life at St Christopher’s House and we have a full and varied programme of events, including a grand opening ceremony for our new library that has been created by tenants and staff, regular reminiscence afternoons that include joint work with Abbeyfields School and a Christmas fair.”

All of the money raised from the activities will go to charity.
