Chance to meet Morpeth Lions
Morpeth Lions Club
ALMOST 200 elderly or disabled people from Morpeth and surrounding villages were entertained at the annual Meet the Lions event.
There was an afternoon tea, bingo and music and those attending the function at Riverside Lodge in High Stanners, which was organised by Morpeth Lions Club, left with an early Christmas box of sweets.
In addition, three local Olympic Torchbearers – Stevie Matthews, Jim Alder and David Hunt – kindly attended and showed their torches to the delighted guests, most of whom had not been able to see it when it passed through the town in June.
Lions President Simon Pringle was on hand to greet the guests and was later joined by Morpeth Mayor Mark Horton and his wife Lynne.
Coun Horton took the opportunity to wish everyone present a very happy afternoon and to thank the Lions members for the work they do in the community, including organising this event.
Mr Pringle then said: “This event could not happen without a lot of hard work and co-operation from so many people.
“We are grateful to Liz and Bill Durning for allowing the use of their premises and crockery plus their very helpful staff, the entertainers for all the pleasure they have given, the Lions ladies for the wonderful food everyone has enjoyed and for setting out the tables, local Guides for helping to serve food, the British Red Cross for being on hand in case of an emergency and finally to Lion Robin Cooper for being the main organiser of Meet the Lions.”
Excellent entertainment came from local artistes Hunter Theatre Arts, Alex Banfield and St George’s United Reformed Church Ceilidh Group. Humour was provided by the Master of Ceremonies, Lion David Livesey.
As is the custom, special gifts were presented. This year, it was decided they should be presented to a couple who were celebrating 74 years of marriage, Bill and Alice Hannett.
At the end of a very full afternoon, the guests departed and all that was left was to clear up and start planning for the 2013 event.
