Community groups on flood alert
MORPETH community groups are on stand-by to come to the aid of flood victims.
Members of Morpeth Lions Club and Morpeth Rotary Club met this morning to discuss the disaster.
And each of the organisations will raise it with their own membership tonight.
In 2008 the two groups were invaluable in working alongside others in the town to set up a flood victims’ furniture and furnishings store, help with the clean-up operation and provide financial and emotional support.
A Morpeth Flood Victims Appeal, led by the Lions, raised more than £200,000.
Lion Les Sage said: “There is not much we can do at this stage, but we will be meeting to decide what we can do in the longer term.
“We won’t be able to do as much as we did last time, and people might not need us as much, but we will help where we can if possible.”
Mr Sage said the second flood in four years for residents of High Stanners will hit them hard.
“Here we are, four years on, and we are no further forward,” he said.
“I know the flood scheme work is going to start, but it will be four-and-a-half years since the 2008 flood when that happens and if you are 85 years of age you can’t wait that long.
“People are just so sad. Fortunately, the flood is not as severe as it was the last time, but for those people who have been flooded it is just as bad and the big thing now for them is going to be getting insurance.
“Some people will not want to go back to their homes after this.”
