Council boosts appeal

MORPETH Town Council has backed efforts to support residents hit by flooding last week.

Members agreed to allocate £1,000 from its contingency funds to the appeal led by Morpeth Lions Club, Rotary Club and Soroptimists.

A number of properties across the town were affected when water escaped the River Wansbeck and the Cotting Burn on the morning of Tuesday, September 25.

Coun Derek Thompson said: “The way Morpeth comes together in times of need is tremendous and we need to make a contribution towards this appeal.”

The £1,000 amount was proposed by Coun David Parker, who said the authority should write to the county council asking for the flood alleviation scheme planning application to be progressed as quickly as possible.

This was approved and councillors also recorded their sympathy for all those who had been flooded in Morpeth.

Coun Les Cassie said it would be useful for a single county council officer to be in charge of the recovery operation, like there was at the former Castle Morpeth Council following the 2008 floods.

Members praised the efforts of town council staff on the day. The town hall was opened at 7am and hot food and drink was available to residents who were evacuated.
