Council’s pleas for safety bollards go unanswered
SAFETY concerns at a Morpeth junction have still not been answered by highways chiefs, councillors say.
Morpeth Town Council has long complained about fears for pedestrian safety at the re-designed Telford Bridge junction after vehicles were seen mounting the kerbs.
The authority had urged Northumberland County Council to erect bollards in the area, but while one post has been installed, the town’s Planning and Transport Committee said it is inadequate and it is still waiting for a response to concerns.
Coun David Parker said: “I was nominated by this council to speak to the county’s area committee about this issue months and months ago.
“The Northumberland County Council officers did say that they were going to take action. They have, of course, taken action fairly recently, but I don’t think it is what was seemed to be suggested or required.
“I would say the bollard is in the wrong position.
“I thought there were going to be three bollards, or thereabouts. I have still observed vehicles on the pavement.
“I am also disappointed that the county council has not responded to this council’s question at the area committee when we were promised a response, nor has it responded to a subsequent letter from our staff reminding the county council that it was supposed to be giving us a reply.”
A county council spokeswoman said it has now been agreed that two additional bollards will be erected.
“Discussions have taken place with the management of St George’s Church and it has been agreed that a further two bollards will be placed outside the church. We anticipate them being in place during April,” she said.
