Harriet and Andrew 'Tot' Thornton from Kirkhill in Morpeth celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary

A HAPPY Morpeth couple have celebrated a sparkling marriage milestone.

Harriet and Andrew ‘Tot’ Thornton, of Kirkhill, have marked 60 years of wedded bliss.

The pair met at the local playhouse when Harriet, who was just 15 at the time, was there with another young chap, but it was a further year before she and Andrew began their courtship.

And on March 22, 1952, they were married at St Mary’s Church, Morpeth.

Initially, they lived in Pegswood, where Andrew, now aged 86, worked as a miner, but it wasn’t long before they returned to Morpeth.

Mrs Thornton, 80, said: “We have had a happy marriage, we have got by nicely. We have been married 60 years so we must have done something right.

“Everybody has their ups and downs, but you support each other through life.”

The couple have four children, David, June, Brian and Catherine, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
