Ebook scheme offers bigger choice

COUNTY residents now have greater reading flexibility following the launch of a new ebook scheme.

The lending service will be available through a link on a Northumberland County Council website and free to borrow for all library members.

Customers can borrow up to three books concurrently for a loan period of up to 21 days. All they need to login is their borrower number and PIN.

When members lend a book using the online service it will wirelessly appear on their device. It is free to borrow them and there will be no charges for overdue books because once your time is up, the book will simply disappear from the device.

There are about 1,200 ebooks available and they are compatible with PCs, Macs and many ebook readers except the Kindle (this is a restriction placed on Kindle by Amazon). They can also be downloaded directly to iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

Coun Neil Bradbury, executive member responsible for libraries, said: “Over recent months we’ve had a growing number of inquiries about ebooks and I am delighted that we have been able to introduce this new service to meet the needs of our readers.”
