Extra parking bays help ease the squeeze in busy street

PARKING pressure in a Ponteland street has finally been eased.
After months of negotiations between housing association Isos and Northumberland County Council, 12 new parking bays have been installed in an area of Thornhill Road.
Ward member Richard Dodd has been the driving force behind the £57,000 initiative to help people living in Isos bungalows, who faced a daily scramble for parking in the busy street that contains two schools and a Sure Start children’s centre and is also next to the Merton Way shopping centre.
He has allocated some of his members’ small schemes allowance to part-fund the project.
“We have worked on this road for quite a long time, putting in a crossing and new lining, and this is the final piece of the jigsaw to give the more senior residents the chance to be able to park directly outside their homes,” he said.
This scheme follows a determined effort to clamp down on inconsiderate parking in the areas around Ponteland First School and Richard Coates Middle School over the last five years, including on-street restrictions, a pedestrian crossing and the extension of double yellow lines.
Resident Joe Faulder said: “This is much better for us now, being able to park right next to the house and not having to worry about finding a space or parking on a narrow, busy road.”
The work was carried out by Mears Construction and Groundwork North East.
Isos Support Services Manager Andy Kennedy said: “We know the residents have been experiencing parking problems here for some time and so in consultation with the local community and in partnership with the council, we have provided these extra bays to ease the squeeze.”
