Garden waste scheme starts up again

GREEN waste collections will resume in Northumberland early next month.

They will start up again from the week beginning March 4 or March 11, depending on where residents live, and continue until November.

All those who used the kerbside collection service last year have been sent a letter from the county council inviting them to take part again.

The garden waste service costs £23 for each 240-litre wheeled bin for fortnightly collections, and extra bins can be rented. Anyone who pays for the service online and by credit or debit card before the end March will be entered into a prize draw to win £20 of vouchers.

Head of Waste Management Paul Jones said: “Our recycling rates across the county improve year on year and this initiative is set to continue that trend with the enthusiastic support of the many thousands of keen gardeners who contribute to Northumberland’s green agenda.

“We are working hard at increasing the number of properties covered by the scheme each year to assist with this and I would urge anyone not already involved to consider participating in a project that contributes to a better quality of life for all of us.”

People who do not sign up for the garden waste collection service, or do not live in an area where it is collected, can take all of their green waste to their local Household Waste Recovery Centre.

If last year’s subscribers have not received a letter to renew their subscription to the service by the end of February, they should contact the council so that they can be issued with their unique reference number.

Residents wishing to join the kerbside scheme should email ask@northumber land.gov.uk or phone 0845 600 6400 to see if their property can be included.
