Group pledges to take care of Dinah
Morpeth and District Soroptimists
A MORPETH community group has undertaken a 10-year commitment to sponsor an African child’s education.
And members of the Soroptimists kicked off their support for Dianah Apio with a Wine, Fruit Juice and Cheese tasting evening that was hosted by Jenny McLean. It raised more than £300, which will fund her education for a year.
Educate for Change is a small charity sponsoring orphaned children in a rural part of Uganda so they can go to school and have the opportunity to change their lives for the better.
Past President Trish Walker, who initiated the Soroptimists’ involvement in the project, said: “Sending a child to school truly changes the lives of children like Dianah. It also guarantees three meals a day, safety, clean water and the opportunity that education brings to make choices about their lives in the future.
“Morpeth Soroptimists have made a commitment to pay the school fees until Dianah is at least 16 and in return she will write to the club and we will receive annual school reports.
“It means a huge amount to children like Dianah that they have their own sponsor who cares about their welfare and it is important that children have continuity in their sponsorship in education.”
Supporting Educate for Change is just one of a number of projects that the Morpeth club for women in management and professions is involved in. For more information about its programme of activities and events, as well as how to join, visit www.morpeth-soroptimists.org.uk
