PEOPLE of all ages came along to see the New Year Morpeth Hunt set off from its usual location.

As last New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday, the hunt took place on January 2, a trading day. To avoid causing too much disruption, the riders and hounds set off from Pigdon instead.

But there were no such issues this time round and on Tuesday, the party set off from New Market in the town centre. This event was preceded by the Boxing Day hunt, which set off from outside The Dyke Neuk Inn, Meldon. There were around 80 mounted followers.

Joint Master of the Hunt Valerie Jackson said: “Although the weather has been unkind, there was a decent turnout at the Dyke Neuk.

“As for New Year’s Day, I’m always amazed by the number of people – both adults and children – who come into Morpeth to see the horses and hounds and watch the start of the meet. It helps us to keep the tradition going.”
