A NEW information office has opened in Morpeth for people to find out more about flood works.

The drop-in centre in Newgate Street has been set up by the Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council to provide up-to-date information about the progress of the £21million flood alleviation scheme.

The project will provide a floodwater storage facility upstream to limit the flow of water through Morpeth, as well as improved town centre defences.

Additional work will be carried out on the town’s three burns to further reduce the risk of flooding.

The overall scheme aims to protect more than 1,000 homes and businesses.

The drop-in centre will act as a focal point for residents, businesses and visitors to get details about the project, ask questions and give feedback on the works.

It will also be used as a project office by contractors Birse Civils.

Environment Agency Community Liaison Officer Helen Newsome said: “We know how important the flood scheme is to people and that they are going to want information about the work so we hope this facility will make it easy for people to keep in close touch with what’s happening around the different aspects of the development.

“So far, the public have helped us greatly in giving their views on the most appropriate design for the scheme and we want them to continue to be involved by bringing their questions and feedback to us.”

Initially, the centre will open Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 2pm, but the times may be revised depending on public comments.
