Lest we forget them

COMMUNITIES across Northumberland will pay their respects to the fallen at special services on Sunday.

Morpeth and Ponteland are among the towns that will pay their annual tribute to members of the Armed Forces who have given their lives in service to their country.

The Parade in Morpeth will move off from the Town Hall at 10.35am, led by the Morpeth Pipe Band, and march to the Cenotaph via Bridge Street, Castle Square and Castle Bank.

After a prayer by the Rev Tony Curtis, the Exhortation and the sounding of the Last Post, there will be a two-minute silence at 11am. Following this will be the placing of wreaths.

The Parade will then return to the town centre and once everyone is in position, commanders will call “eyes left” for Mayor Mark Horton to take the salute.

In Ponteland, the assembled group will march from the leisure centre at 10.55am to the war memorial outside the Memorial Hall for the Act of Remembrance.

There will be rolling road closures for both events.

Residents are invited to join staff, councillors, ex-servicemen and representatives of the Royal British Legion for a Remembrance Service at County Hall in Loansdean on Friday.

To mark the end of the First World War at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, a two-minute silence will be held.

Accompanied by a Northumbrian piper, wreaths of poppies will be laid at the war memorial by Northumberland County Council Chairman Jim Smith and by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland among others.

Anyone wishing to attend the ceremony is asked to assemble at the memorial by the Viking statue at 10.40am.

Anyone wishing to lay a wreath should arrive at the County Hall restaurant by 10.30am for a short briefing.

On Monday morning, there will be a short Service of Remembrance and placing of wreaths at the King Edward VI School War Memorial on behalf of the school and the Edwardians Association.
