Car park cuts spark concern

TOWN councillors have objected to moves to cut spaces from a proposed station car park.

Northumberland County Council has taken over plans from Network Rail to create a car park at the former railway sidings in Coopies Lane.

However, the authority has submitted an application to reduce the number of spaces from the approved 92 to 76 after its investigations found the area was not big enough for the original plans.

But Morpeth Town councillors say a 92-space car park should be the absolute minimum.

Coun Nic Best said: “When it was originally mentioned that there would be 92 spaces that was seen as the very minimum that would be needed and the car park would still be full to capacity. Rail passenger usage is going up dramatically.

“I would say let’s not reduce the number of spaces unless there is a very good excuse.”

Coun David Parker added: “I agree with you. The present car park is totally inadequate. If you are going to do a job, do it properly. Every day you go along there there are cars parked on the road, often parked illegally.”

The council’s Planning and Transport Committee will submit its concerns to county planners.
