MP hits out at bird hide vandals

VANDALS who destroyed a bird hide at Ellington Nature Reserve have been condemned by Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith.

Last week the Herald reported that an arson attack at the volunteer-run reserve had burnt the hide to the ground, causing about £15,000 worth of damage.

Sir Alan, whose constituency covers the parish, has expressed his disappointment at the incident and has offered his support to the community.

He said: “It is very sad to see a community project being destroyed by the mindless actions of a few people.

“The community in Ellington put a great deal of effort into setting up the nature reserve and building the hide.

“I hope insurance will be able to help cover the cost of repairing the damage, but if the parish council and the Friends of Ellington Pond need further assistance I have asked them to get in touch.”

The pond group is still in discussions with its insurance company and funders about whether it should replace the hide. Alternative options, such as hides with steel structures, could also be considered.

The arson attack took place at about 3.25pm on Sunday, April 29. Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 101, ext 69191, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
