Plea to help town business
MP Ian Lavery is calling for cross-county support to press for Enterprise Zone status for Lynemouth.
The Wansbeck member says it is vital for the Port of Blyth Enterprise Zone to be extended to take in the area around the Rio Tinto Alcan site following the closure of the smelter.
Enterprise status will give enhanced capital allowances for private investment, business rate relief, subsidies and help with transport links.
Mr Lavery said: “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make sure this coalition has got the message that its policies are hitting south east Northumberland hard and the extension of the Port of Blyth Enterprise Zone is practical help now.
“The Chancellor needs to listen to those on the ground who are dealing with unemployment and squeezed living standards and we’re hoping the county council will support our lobby to make this happen.”
Blyth Valley MP Ronnie Campbell and Leader of the Northumberland Leader Group Grant Davey are backing the calls, but they say it is not a political issue and all parties should show their support.
