Residents look over revised housing plans

REVISED plans for a major housing development at Loansdean have been presented to residents.

Developer Bellway is working on a new application for the Morpeth site after its initial bid for 200 homes was rejected on appeal.

The company is currently challenging the decision in the High Court, but it is also planning a revised application for the field on the outskirts of the town.

And Bellway representatives have met residents’ opposition group, the South Morpeth Coalition, to sound it out about its proposals.

Coalition member David Holden said proposals include reducing the number of homes to 193, including 96 affordable properties.

The former plans provided for 100 affordable houses, with 33 for rent and 67 for sale.

In discussions with the Coalition, Bellway suggested that the new scheme will propose 57 for rent and 39 for sale at 70 per cent of the market value.

However, the changes have done nothing to resolve the residents’ objections.

Mr Holden said: “We had a relatively short meeting with Bellway and its representatives told us that this is where they are at the moment with the plans.

“When it makes the application it may be the same as that or it could be different.

“It doesn’t change our views.

“When the Planning Inspector refused the plans he considered that the affordable housing on offer did not outweigh the loss or benefit of the open countryside and we should maintain the town boundary in its current position.

“We feel that what Bellway has done really is not significant enough to change that view.

“We continue to support that view and we are going to fight this application just as strongly as we fought the previous one.”

Bellway expects to submit the revised application to Northumberland County Council next month.
