Respect town, firms are told

BIG businesses should be made to respect Morpeth’s character, a councillor has said.

Town and county member Ian Lindley said that too often corporate signage and national fascias are used in the area, which may not be in keeping.

“We have all these corporate fascias and I think in Morpeth we want to be moving towards things that are more in keeping with the town,” he said.

“A lot of the big retailers don’t seem to be interested in that at all.

“I would like to see pressure put on them in the longer term over this because at the moment we are not getting anywhere at all.”

His comments came at a meeting of Morpeth Town Council’s Planning and Transport Committee as members discussed an application for new signage at HSBC in New Market.

Councillors said they would object to illuminated signage as it is against their policy.

The application will be decided by Northumberland County Council.
