New event at fete should be a big pull

VILLAGERS are urged to stand up and be counted for where they live at a popular event.

The main competition at this year’s Belsay Fete is a tug-of-war challenge where teams will aim to win a trophy and other prizes, which are to be competed for annually.

This inaugural contest will be run in the spirit of people taking part and enjoying themselves, while representing their community. There is no entry fee and competitors should wear sturdy boots. Gloves are permitted.

Communities invited to take part are Belsay, Whalton, Stamfordham, Matfen, Scots Gap and Cambo, Capheaton with Kirkharle and Kirkheaton, Kirkwhelpington, Middleton, Meldon and Hartburn, Waldridge with Ingoe and Black Heddon, Ogle with Kirkley and Milbourne, and Netherwitton and Longwitton.

Teams of six, including a woman, will compete in a round-robin format.

There is much more fun to be had at the Belsay School Field on Saturday.

Other activities include children’s sports and races, face painting, pony rides, Hook the Duck, Mash the Mink, Name the Teddy and stocks for the village idiot. A dog agility display and competition will also take place.

A book stall, plant stall with rare and unusual plants and shrubs, tombola, local produce and cake stall and a fully-licensed bar will be available too. Other refreshments include a hog roast, ice cream and sweets.

The Newbiggin Brass Band, which has a rich musical history, will be playing in the large marquee between 5pm and 8pm.
