PLANS for new facilities for youngsters within the Juliet Oakley Activity Area in Pegswood have been unveiled.

At a recent meeting of the parish council, Paul Taylor from proposed supplier The Play Practice showed members what the under eights section would look like if the authority gets the funding in place.

He said the company has designed and installed play areas in other parts of Northumberland, such as Ponteland, and at Pegswood it would include swings, climbing areas, a small bridge, a see-saw and colourful animal and forest shapes.

This follows consultation with parents and after looking through their responses, grassed matting will surround each piece of equipment.

Morpeth Neighbourhood Sergeant Sharon Wilmore-Greaves attended the council meeting and said that as the play area is on the other side of the railway line in Welfare Park, she had concerns about some older children and teenagers playing there and carrying out anti-social behaviour in the evenings.

However, parish Chairman Peter Stonell said a skatepark and five-a-side football facility are being planned for the park, which would attract teenagers.

“After hearing what is being proposed, my concerns have been much reduced,” said Sgt Wilmore-Greaves.

The under eights play area will cost £12,425 and more than £2,000 will come from a special memorial fund. The parish council’s first port of call to try to get the rest of the money will be the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.

Juliet Oakley, a former parish councillor, died after a long illness in autumn 2011. She had been the driving force behind getting the funding in place for the area and played a major part in organising the official opening of the facility by the Duchess of Northumberland in June of that year.

The features already in place include a slide, grass mound, rope climbing frame, basket swing and rope swing, dry river beds, sand pits and tunnels.
