A year of events to celebrate the life of Suffragette Emily

A YEAR of celebrations to commemorate Northumberland Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison will begin with exhibitions.

The women’s rights campaigner lived in Longhorsley and, following her death in 1913 after she was struck by the King’s horse at the Epsom Derby, she was buried in St Mary’s churchyard in Morpeth.

A number of events are being planned in the county to mark the centenary of her death, including paying tribute through Morpeth In Bloom displays and the Northumbrian Gathering.

To launch the commemorations, Morpeth Antiquarian Society has organised exhibitions on the Women of Morpeth and domestic life 100 years ago.

Visitors to Morpeth Town Hall will be able to see artefacts such as cooking utensils, flat irons and needlecraft from the society’s collections on show in the Butter Market display cases, which will be augmented later in the year by other pieces relating to the Suffragette movement.

Meanwhile, at 1-3 Oldgate there will be fascinating adverts from the early 20th Century showing household items, cosmetics and fashions, and there will be a selection of photographs and information panels about Emily Davison, as well as local shopkeeper Micah Elliott and other women connected with the town.

The society is also staging a heritage event on Saturday, February 16, at the Oldgate building following similar successful events in December.

People can call in for a coffee, meet society members and chat about local history.

The antiquarians are particularly keen to hear information about Emily Davison, Suffragettes and other notable local women from all eras of history, and they are also gathering stories of life during the First World War for events in 2014. The drop-in is from 10am to 3pm.
