Home is better bar none

A PIECE of Morpeth pub history has found a new home at a nearby venue.
The Old Red Bull in Dark Lane will be knocked down later this year as part of the new Morrisons supermarket development in Low Stanners – but the bar will live on at the Morpeth Masonic Centre.
After hearing that the foodstore plans would include the pub being demolished, Neil Fraser from the centre got in touch with Dransfield Properties to see if the facility could be used at the premises, located in Winton House, as it never had a proper bar installed.
The team at Tolent, the main contractors on the Morrisons site, helped in the move and the bar is now pride of place in its new location.
Mr Fraser said: “We are delighted with the new bar, it’s fantastic. Our members are thrilled as we simply couldn’t afford to replace our old falling down bar prior to this kind offer.
“We hold a lot of functions at Winton House, including charity events and weddings. It really does make a big difference to us having a proper bar and we are really grateful to both Dransfield Properties and Tolent for helping us out.”
The news has been welcomed by Morpeth couple Louise and George Davison, who are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year after first meeting at the Old Red Bull where Mrs Davison worked.
And after they asked if it was possible to get a piece of memorabilia, Mr Fraser, an amateur woodturner, got creative to give them a piece of history.
Mrs Davison said: “It is great to know that the bar is being saved – it’s part of our courting history so we are really please to know it is still in Morpeth.
“The Masonic Centre even made us a wooden pen from a piece of the bar, which is lovely of them.”
The Old Red Bull building is currently being used as a site office for the new development until it is demolished in the summer.
Amanda Holmes from Dransfield Properties said: “It is great news that the Red Bull bar is being kept in the town and put to good use.
“We were delighted to be able to help out with this project.”
