Planning a Chernobyl life line

PLANS are under way to welcome 10 Chernobyl children to Morpeth.

The newly-formed Morpeth and Wansbeck Link of Chernobyl Children’s Life Line has held its first committee meeting to begin preparations for the visit next year.

The charity aims to give the youngsters a break from the radioactive affected area where they live and by coming to the UK for just four weeks it can benefit their immune system by two years.

Children are also able to receive medical, dental and optical treatment.

Morpeth Committee Chairman Lilian Nelson said: “Their UK visit is not just about improving their health. They can also enjoy visits to local attractions, including the coast.

“It is hoped that 10 children will arrive in our area next year, together with an interpreter. It costs £500 per child to come over and already fund-raising has taken place at a car boot sale and Morpeth Fair.

“Host families have been identified thanks to an article in the Morpeth Herald. In addition, we have some supporters who will take the children out when host families are unable to.

“Local churches have also expressed an interest in helping. I feel this augurs well for our local Link.”

The committee is still seeking volunteers to help with the scheme and particularly needs an activity co-ordinator and fundraising co-ordinator. Anyone able to help should contact Mrs Nelson on 01670 518773.
