PM enjoys a taste of Northumberland

THE Prime Minister has hailed the quality of the food and drink on offer at the inaugural Northumberland Day.

The initiative, hosted and organised by MP Guy Opperman, showcased the diverse range of businesses in the county.

Ian Lavery, Sir Alan Beith and Ronnie Campbell, the three other MPs in the area, were asked to invite a producer down to the event. Pies, bread, cheese and beer were among the items available at the parliamentary reception.

David Cameron praised the ‘delicious’ food and said his children were big fans of Fentimans’ pink lemonade, before stressing the importance of a working countryside.

Mr Opperman said: “I was delighted the event was such a success. The first-ever Northumberland Day in the Houses of Parliament was a fantastic opportunity to show off the county at its best. I am very lucky to represent what I believe is the most beautiful area in the UK and it is my job to make people know all about it. I genuinely believe that Northumberland is the hidden gem of the north and this was just one way of showing people what we have to offer.”

Other high profile guests included Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles and Commons Speaker John Bercow. The day also highlighted the county’s visual attractions and the appeal of its market towns and villages as representatives from a number of tourism bodies were present.
