Ponteland’s got the X factor as
a place to live

PONTELAND has been named in the top 10 places to live in the region.

The honour has been awarded in the Sunday Times Best Places To Live guide, which placed Ponteland among the 10 most desirable locations in the North East and Yorkshire.

The guide has taken a range of factors into account, including transport links, quality of schools, natural beauty, a low crime rate, property prices, cultural life and unemployment.

There are also assessments of individual assets, such as festivals or proximity to an airport.

Ponteland Mayor Peter Cowey says the judgment is spot on.

“I wasn’t surprised to see Ponteland in the list — in fact I would have been more surprised had it not been there,” he said.

“Ponteland is a rural area, which has access to Newcastle and the airport, and as you drive out of Ponteland very quickly you are in open countryside, so it is very attractive for people.

“The buildings are well kept, the streets are kept clean and we have a wonderful committee of the Friends of Ponteland Park who look after the flowers and trees.

“People can go to the park and the River Pont is there and there is somewhere to take dogs for a walk.

“It all sounds a bit twee, but it is true.”

He added: “It is lovely, but it doesn’t mean to say we can sit on our laurels. We have plans to enhance whatever we can in the park and we have the Ponteland In Bloom committee, which is already starting to talk about what needs to be done this year.”

Coun Cowey said it is also vital that the community is protected from development, with major housing bids looming.

“This could all be threatened by development,” he said.

“We don’t want to turn into a suburb of Newcastle.”
