Remembering the RAF heroes

A COMMEMORATION service for those who lost their lives in the Battle of Britain will take place in Morpeth later this month.

The Royal Air Force had less than 650 aircraft to defend against the might of the German Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940, with some planes flown by pilots from Commonwealth countries and Poland.

Despite the grave situation, with more than 200 pilots killed or seriously injured, September 15 saw what Sir Winston Churchill called ‘one of the decisive battles of the war’ and with it, the Luftwaffe’s greatest defeat.

The Morpeth service, organised by the town branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, will be held in St James’ Church, Copper Chare, on Sunday, September 23, from 10am.

It will be attended by RAF personnel past and present, civic dignitaries from Northumberland County Council and Morpeth Town Council and Lord Lieutenant of the county. A bugler will be in place to sound ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’.

Members of the public are very welcome to join in this tribute.
