A GROUP of Morpeth residents tucked into a traditional treat thanks to a donation.

The town’s Leeds Building Society branch paid for 18 people living in Mathesons Gardens to enjoy a fish and chip supper, which in turn enabled them to increase their contribution to a cancer charity appeal.

The company encourages its outlets to engage with communities under its Local feel, National presence ethos.

Morpeth Customer Advisor Verena Harrigan said: “We’re supporting groups and organisations across the town as best we can and we asked the residents of Mathesons Gardens if we could make a contribution to anything they were doing. We were happy to provide the funding for the supper, especially as it has enabled them to make a larger donation to charity.

“We will be helping them with future events and other clubs and groups will be contacted in the coming weeks and months.”

The sheltered housing was built in the mid-1980s. It is linked with nearby Oldgate Court.

One of its residents, George Graham, said: “We were pleasantly surprised to be approached by Leeds Building Society and we’re very grateful for its donation. It will be nice to work with its staff at future fundraising events.

“Having the fish and chip supper paid for meant that we increased the amount collected at our recent coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support. Residents donated part or all the money they would have spent on the food in addition to their usual contribution.”
