Revival of sports awards in May
A CEREMONY to honour the achievements of Morpeth’s sporting stars is making a comeback.
The Castle Morpeth Sports Awards were a popular fixture in the calendar from 1977, when 34 clubs and organisations gave £1 to help get it started, until five years ago.
It fell by the wayside in the reorganisation of local government, when the former borough council was closed down.
But now a group of volunteers, led by Derek Thompson and Peter Rushworth of Morpeth Amateur Swimming Club, have formed the Morpeth Sports Council to revive the event on a smaller scale.
As well as the Morpeth Town Council area, people can be nominated by a family member or member of the public if they live in the parishes of Hepscott, Longhirst, Longhorsley, Mitford, Morpeth, Pegswood, Stannington, Ulgham and Whalton.
Mr Rushworth said: “When I asked around, I discovered that most of the original trophies were still accounted for and I thought it would be far better if they were being presented to our top sporting teams and individuals, rather than just sitting on a shelf.
“We have replaced the two that were missing and have booked a venue (Morpeth Rugby Club). Hopefully, we will get a lot of entries from Morpeth and surrounding villages.”
The event, which will recognise the efforts of teams and individuals during 2012, will take place on May 23. There is a Sportsperson of the Year award and the other categories are as follows: Junior Male, Junior Female, Team Award (U13), Team Award (U18), Senior Female, Senior Males, Sportability Award, Team Award, Senior Masters and Services to Sport.
Mr Thompson said: “It will be good for all of Morpeth’s sporting clubs to be in the same place together and the awards will hopefully lead to us building closer links with each other.”
Application forms are available from Morpeth Town Hall. The closing date for nominations and ticket applications is Saturday, April 13.
