PONTELAND residents turned out in force for a traditional Easter event.

The Raising of the Cross ceremony took place at Coates Green on Good Friday and as always it involved representatives from the area’s four churches, which came together following their own services.

Ministers taking part were Father Seamus O’Kane of St Matthew’s RC Church, Rev Peter Barham and Rev Christine Brown from St Mary’s Church and Rev Pat Brooks and Rev Robin Brooks, who are based at Ponteland Methodist Church. Rev Rowena Francis, Northern Synod Moderator of the United Reformed Church (URC), was representing Ponteland URC.

The St Mary’s Church Choir led the singing of a few hymns.

Rev Barham said: “I was staggered by how many people were there to watch the ceremony, I would say about 250 to 300.

“It’s very important that we come together each year to worship and also remind those who drive or walk past that something important happened on this day.”
