Store site swamped

WORK on Morpeth’s new supermarket was stopped when the site flooded on Tuesday.

The water was about a foot high on the land in Low Stanners that will become a Morrisons store and staff from contractors Tolent quickly decided that it would be unsafe to continue.

It gathered where the new underground car park will be located.

Assessments took place yesterday to see when work can resume.

A spokeswoman for Dransfield Properties, which is developing the scheme, said: “Staff from Tolent were on site early after hearing the flood warnings and they were able to move important machinery to higher ground.

“The river water didn’t top the new flood defence wall, which was built as part of the project. It’s difficult to make a judgement about whether the underground car park would be flooded if a similar amount of rainfall fell when the supermarket is open because it has yet to be completed.”
