Stumped over tree question

SOME new trees will be planted in Ponteland, but finding a place for them will not be straightforward.

At a meeting of the town council, members were told that Ponteland Lions Club has offered to plant up to 60 trees in the area.

Members of the Environment Working Party identified areas of common land that could be used, but some councillors said there may be an issue over grazing rights and they would look better without trees.

Another location mentioned was some grassland on Callerton Lane, but Coun David Butler said: “There is a problem with trying to plant trees near roads because you have to jump through a lot of hoops with the county council’s highways department to get anywhere.”

It was agreed that the matter would be referred back to the working party for further discussion.
