Support for flood victims

PRACTICAL and emotional support is being offered to Morpeth’s flood victims.

Dozens of properties were flooded in the town last week as the River Wansbeck and Cotting Burn overflowed, while drain problems and surface water flooding affected some homes away from the main watercourses.

Now a flood recovery group has been set up by Northumberland County Council.

Partners include Northumbria Police, the Environment Agency, Morpeth Flood Action Group, Morpeth Town Council, The British Red Cross and Morpeth Voluntary Service Organisations.

County Director of Public Health and Protection Sue Milner said: “This group has been set up to co-ordinate the provision of a full range of practical assistance and support to those directly or indirectly affected by flooding last week or on previous occasions.

“We aim to help give the communities affected easy access to the assistance they require.”

The council has provided communal skips in High Stanners and Mitford Road for residents to dispose of flood-damaged household goods and furniture. Electrical and electronic items cannot be discarded, but they will be collected free of charge by the authority’s bulky waste service.

Meanwhile, the Morpeth Household Waste Recovery Centre is open seven days a week, from 8am to 7.30pm, or until 6pm after November 1. However, residents must check that they have the go-ahead from their insurance company before they dispose of any damaged belongings.

The council’s customer services team is available to help with queries about Council Tax payments for flooded properties, advise businesses that have suffered flood damage and provide information about road closures.

Morpeth Town Hall is also being used by council staff and volunteers to provide financial, practical and emotional help. Call in, or telephone 01670 514314.

For help disposing of goods, or to report that skips are full, contact the county council on 0845 6006400.
