A GROUP of teenagers from Hadston have dug in to add some new greenery to their community.

As part of the landscape improvements led by environmental charity Groundwork North East, members of the Hadston House Youth and Community Projects volunteered their time to help out by planting beech hedges.

The programme of works was designed as a result of consultation with local residents, who expressed a desire to create more visually interesting spaces in the village and have young people taking part in making diverse habitats for wildlife.

Hadston House Project Leader, Scott Dickinson, was supportive of the activity to engage young adults over the age of 16 who fall within the category of being at risk of not in education, employment or training (NEET).

He said: “We aim to support people to better their lives with employment and training courses.

“It’s good to be able to offer the young people of Hadston opportunities that will benefit the community where they live and also help to further their skills and employment prospects for the future.

“They have been really successful in planting the hedges and impressed everyone with their hard work and effort.”

Groundwork North East has been working with social landlord Isos Housing and Mears to enhance the appearance of Hadston.

Other improvements include railings to create semi-private spaces, new footpaths and tree planting that will provide seasonal colour in green spaces.

Isos Assistant Director for Customers and Communities, Jon Twelves, said: “We’re really pleased to be funding this work for Hadston as part of a wider programme of investment in the village.

“We believe in building and supporting the communities where we work and projects like this one from Groundwork North East give everyone a lift.”
