Village funds up for grabs

THERE’S less than a week left for Northumberland villages to apply for lottery regeneration funds.

The Big Lottery Fund’s Village SOS scheme aims to help rural communities to come together to improve facilities, services and opportunities for local people.

Grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 are available for projects in areas with less than 3,000 people, such as community shops and pubs, energy and transport schemes, or craft and food projects.

Funding has already been awarded for a community cinema initiative in Seahouses, as well as harbour improvements on Lindisfarne.

But the programme closes for applications on Wednesday.

Big Lottery Fund Head of the North East James Turner said: “The Village SOS scheme is a unique opportunity for social enterprises. These and past awards show what can be achieved when people come together and unlock the potential which exists in their communities.

“I would urge people to explore this chance to revive their local area and help buck the trend of rural decline.”
