Win for Inner Wheel in hard-fought clubs’ quiz
Vivien Scott from Morpeth Inner Wheel Club graciously received the Four Way Quiz trophy from Morpeth Rotary President Laurie Walker on behalf of her winning team, which also included Elaine McClarence, Suzanne Hamnett and Margaret Miller.
THE first ever general knowledge quiz between four of the town’s most well-known service organisations resulted in a magnificent win by Morpeth Inner Wheel.
For many years, Morpeth Rotary Club has hosted a three-way quiz – a contest which also included the town’s Inner Wheel Club and the Morpeth and District Soroptimists. For the first time, Morpeth Lions Club was invited and its members agreed to take part in this year’s event. The participants were cheered on by an audience of 65 at Morpeth Golf Club.
The prize was honour and acclaim and a fine silver salver as a trophy.
The quiz master was Morpeth Rotarian Alan Barron, of Ponteland, and the Rotary Club team was introduced by retired Headteacher of King Edward VI School Michael Duffy.
Those representing the Soroptimists were presented by Denise Alcock and Morpeth Lions President Simon Pringle gave the names of its team members. Team captain for the Inner Wheel was Vivien Scott.
Questions covered film, history, geography, literature, music, quotations, sport, finance, spelling, natural history and anatomy.
Teams were stumped to know that a crowd of finches is a charm, the largest land mammal is a red deer, the Brylcreem Boy was Dennis Compton, a golf club in Edinburgh was the oldest in the world, the first names of the artist JMW Turner and that a shark has no bones in its body.
In a hard fought contest, Rotary and Soroptimists were joint leaders in the first round, Rotary led in the second and third and then Inner Wheel took the lead in the fourth round, before winning the final round to finish 11 points clear of Rotary and 12 points ahead of both the Lions and Soroptimists.
Mrs Scott graciously received the salver from Morpeth Rotary Club President Laurie Walker on behalf of her winning team, which also included Elaine McClarence, Suzanne Hamnett and Margaret Miller.
The meal was, as ever, very tasty and well-presented by the Morpeth Golf Club caterers.
