WORK has finally begun on a new car park at Morpeth Railway Station after two years of negotiations.

The 75-space facility in Coopies Lane is being provided by Northumberland County Council in partnership with Network Rail.

Construction of the car park is expected to take around six to eight weeks, but work to resolve complex financing, land ownership and drainage issues has been ongoing for almost two years.

Coun Ian Lindley, whose ward includes the station, said: “At last we will be able to encourage more rail use and have a safe situation in Coopies Lane.

“We have been working with Network Rail on this project for a long time — this car park is part of a suite of improvements developed for this vital gateway to Northumberland. This will soon include full disabled access and improved information and signage to add to the ticket machine already installed, which gives 24-hour access to services.

“The next phase will be to improve the junction to the station to ensure the safest possible pedestrian and traffic flow arrangements together with landscaping of the former builders’ yard on the junction corner.”

The pay-and-display car park will have lighting, an electric car-charging point and be height restricted so that it cannot be used by HGVs. Trees and shrubs will be planted to provide screening from houses in Kingswell, and parking restrictions will be introduced to Coopies Lane and surrounding residential areas to prevent nuisance parking by non-residents.

Council Executive Member Simon Reed said: “I’m pleased that work has now begun on a new car park that will benefit Morpeth residents and commuters.”
