THERE were a number of street parties in Morpeth to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch on June 2, 1953.

One of them took place at what was then the Elliott Centre in Stobhill and Angela Adams kindly loaned the Herald a photograph from the event.

She is the baby in the middle being held by cousin Tom Wright and there are a few other members of her family in the picture.

Elizabeth was proclaimed queen shortly after the death of her father, George VI, on February 6, 1952. The coronation was delayed for more than a year because of the tradition that such an event was inappropriate during the period of mourning.
