Bouldering back in business

A MORPETH bouldering wall is back in business for the summer, while a packed programme of activities is on offer for local youngsters.

Barnabas Safe and Sound has spent more than £100,000 on its Wellwood House premises in Dark Lane to provide the bouldering wall and a youth activity room.

However, the wall has recently been out of action for repairs and a re-set of holds.

Now the work is complete, just in time for the summer holiday season, and a new team of supervisors and instructors has been appointed to lead sessions.

The wall is open Monday to Saturday for general climbing and there will be Rock Club instruction sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

In addition, Barnabas is providing a range of other activities to help keep youngsters entertained.

There will be silk painting, aerosol art, street dance and stop motion animation, and a group will be involved in a ramp building project. There will be an exhibition of art work after the summer.

Afternoon sessions are suitable for teenagers of high school age, while the mornings will focus on a younger age group.

Barnabas Manager Chris Menzies said: “These are exactly the sort of activities we should be providing.

“Our vision is a community which enables young people to thrive. These activities will be fun and challenging and will give participating young people a sense of achievement.”

The programme builds on a successful scheme last year that saw the charity’s courtyard decorated and murals produced.

A timetable of activities is available from Barnabas or Morpeth Town Hall.

Some sessions will be limited to eight people, while climbing instruction is limited to six, so early booking is advised.
