A HOSPICE garden charity has been handed £424 from a Morpeth nursery.

Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre, to the north of the town, provided the cash for Greenfingers through the sale of raffle tickets in May, June and July.

The charity works to create gardens at children’s hospices across the country and currently has five gardens on its waiting list, with more in the pipeline.

It is Heighley Gate’s Charity of the Year and it is the second year the centre has given its support.

The raffle was organised throughout The Garden Centre Group, with all 119 of its outlets taking part in selling tickets.

The national winner received £3,000 of gardening goodies and vouchers, there was £2,000 worth for second place and £1,000 worth for third place.

Greenfingers Chaiman Richard Jackson said: “We would like to say a huge thank-you to Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre for supporting Greenfingers again this year and selling tickets for our raffle, which was exclusively for visitors to The Garden Centre Group garden centres.

“The prizes have been kindly donated by a number of businesses in the horticultural industry. I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved.”

He added: “Children, together with their families, appreciate Greenfingers’ gardens because they make a difference to the quality of their lives.

“The gardens let them spend more time together, at play, or in calm privacy, surrounded by nature and above all, away from the bedside.”
