Dan Lawton, Plantarea Assistant at Heighley Gate Nursery & Garden Centre, gets ready for the garden centre's Grow Your Own Potatoes Weekend.

GARDEN centre staff will chip in with free advice on the humble potato at an event this weekend.

Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre, off the A697 near Morpeth, is hosting a Grow Your Own Potatoes Weekend, with free information on selecting, planting, caring for and harvesting the vegetables.

There will also be a potato modelling competition for youngsters, with a closing date of noon on Sunday, and there will be free workshops on choosing the best variety of potato for your plot, while the restaurant will offer potato-based dishes.

General Manager Roger Wale said: “It’s very rewarding growing your own potatoes and once you have tasted your own home-grown, freshly harvested spuds you will understand how amazing it is. Fresh potatoes are also packed with vitamin C and are very good for you.

“Don’t be put off if you don’t have a veg patch or allotment.

“Potatoes can be easily grown with minimal care in containers in a small garden, back yard or on a patio.

“Plant the potatoes in early spring and a few months later you’ll be eating tasty spuds.”
