YOUNG bookworms have been rewarded for a summer full of reading.

This year, more than 2,000 children in Northumberland completed the Summer Reading Challenge, which is a national initiative to encourage youngsters to develop a love of reading, boost their confidence and teach them new skills.

Participants aged four to 11 had to read at least six books to win a medal and certificate, and they were invited to join in fun, crafts, games and other activities at local libraries, as well as try online projects.

Some of the successful challengers were presented with their medals at an event in Lynemouth Library last month.

Northumberland County Council Executive Member for Libraries Neil Bradbury said: “The reading habits that we develop as children can stay with us for the rest of our lives so it’s really important for youngsters to be encouraged to read.

“The Reading Challenge is a great way to get children reading and enjoying books, as well as encourage families to visit their local libraries.

“More importantly, we know that children who take part read more books and read more widely than those who don’t. Well done to all the children who undertook the challenge.”
