Choir ends two decades of music-making

St Marys Singers farewell concert

St Marys Singers farewell concert

A POPULAR Ponteland choral group has been thanked for all its music after deciding to call it a day.

St Mary’s Singers, which was started in the early 1990s by June Reed, had dozens of regular members who often performed with an orchestra and well-known soloists.

The final concert was held before the end of 2012 and it included a selection from Handel’s Messiah followed by traditional carols and songs.

Proceeds from each event, after expenses have been met, were donated to charities or St Mary’s Church and over the years more than £25,000 has been raised by the group.

Parishioner Muriel Sobo said: “For more than 20 years, the St Mary’s Singers have been part of our village life in Ponteland and its members have entertained us with many different concerts.

“The singers, like the audience, are of all denominations and none – we just appreciate the talent and effort that has gone into making music in our beautiful parish church. Thanks go to a great village choir, director June Reed, very talented pianist Ann Redhead, the soloists and all those who lent a hand.

“God bless you June for the pleasure you have given to hundreds of us. The choir members will no doubt miss their Thursday evenings making music.”
