THE ladies of Lancaster Park WI recently welcomed ballroom dancers Diane and Eddie Billington to their December meeting.
Eddie informed the members that he and Diane have been dancing together since the middle of the 1970s.
After the evening’s business had been concluded, Diane and Eddie demonstrated various dances, with Eddie giving some background, such as the first world ballroom dancing championship was held in 1922, the winner being Victor Sylvester.
1910 saw the introduction of the tango. This originated in Argentina, but arrived in Britain via France. Regarding the foxtrot, this began in 1914 and took its name from the vaudeville dancer Harry Fox, his dance movements being known as Fox’s Trot.
Joint President Pauline Simpson bravely stepped forward when Eddie asked for a volunteer from the floor to dance a social foxtrot with him. She is now awaiting an invitation to participate in the next Strictly Come Dancing competition.
This most enjoyable evening finished off with the partaking of mulled wine and mince pies.
The next meeting will take place on January 5 at Morpeth All Saints School, Pinewood Drive, at 7.30pm. Further information can be obtained from Carol Wilkinson, telephone 01670 510933.
