Fascinating facts and historical gems uncovered

LOCAL history fans in Northumberland can find out more about the county’s heritage and characters in an event this weekend.

For two years staff and volunteers at Northumberland Archives in Woodhorn Museum have been trawling through uncatalogued papers to uncover amazing stories, fascinating facts and historical gems.

And they will share their findings of the Heritage Lottery project in the Working Lives Symposium at Woodhorn on Saturday.

There will be a number of presentations and talks, including by archivist Lynn-Marie Early on The Roddam Family of Northumberland and the Roddam Papers. Admiral Robert Roddam was a significant figure in the life of Admiral Lord Collingwood, of Morpeth.

Sarah Littlefear, another of the project staff, will share her discoveries about the Lost Country Houses of Northumberland, including Kirkley Hall and Dilston Hall.

And Claire Snell will give an insight into the technical side of the investigation, explaining how records are digitised and the online catalogue.

Volunteer Sylvia Coddington will look at The History of Paper: its uses and development, referring to Thomas Bell, former land agent to the Duke of Northumberland.

Woodhorn Head of Collections Sue Wood said: “I’m sure many people would enjoy the event, even if they have never been to Woodhorn or the Archives.

“We’ve uncovered so much interesting information and we’d love to share it.

“This is a great opportunity to find out some of our county’s hidden history and be inspired by our enthusiastic team and volunteers.”

The event runs from 10am to 1pm.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served, but places must be booked in advance.
