Gallery owner Guy makes bold progress

A FORMER Morpeth high school student is hoping that a new exhibition will help to draw visitors form across the county to an up and coming art gallery.

With a huge range of work both from local artists and those outside the region, the ‘Bold. Colour. Progress.’ show is a statement of expression through colour.

It includes abstract work of painters and sculptors who are starting to make a name for themselves in the art world alongside pieces from established masters of their craft, such as previous winners of the Royal Watercolour Society’s highest award and Chelsea Art Society’s Sculpture Award.

The exhibition has been put together by Guy Calvert, curator at The Congregational Art Gallery and Cafe in Rothbury.

After completing his A-Levels at King Edward VI School in 2007, he spent time working in France, Edinburgh and Austria before being drawn back to Northumberland to work to try and bring something new and fresh to the area.

The gallery in Upper High Street was recently established in a Grade II listed former church. It is a space where natural light illuminates the high quality British contemporary art.

The showcase is being held over the next month. The venue is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm Tuesday to Saturday and 11.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday – entry is free.
